Living Donor Kidney Transplant: John Somerville

John Somerville never expected that one day his step-daughter, Alyssa, would save his life.

John was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease which eventually led to his kidney failure. Due to the risks associated with this inherited disorder, John’s blood relatives could not donate a kidney to him. Without hesitation, Alyssa volunteered to be her step-father’s living kidney donor. She was a perfect match.

They chose Aurora St. Luke’s Living Kidney Donor Program and in October 2012, John received a new healthy kidney from Alyssa. His successful transplant was unique in that both of his bad kidneys were also removed during the procedure. It was a complicated surgery which yielded the best result.

About one year post surgery, John’s family reflects on how much they have to be thankful for during this holiday season.
