What Are Painful Bladder Syndrome and IC?

Painful bladder syndrome, also called interstitial cystitis (or IC), is a chronic condition that can cause bladder pressure, bladder pain or pain that reaches into the pelvis. The severity of pain can range from a mild burning pain or discomfort to severe, debilitating pain.

Painful bladder syndrome can affect anyone, but it most often affects women.

Symptoms can be similar to those of chronic urinary tract infections and may include:

  • Pain in the pelvis or the pelvic floor (between the vagina and anus in women and between the scrotum and anus in men)
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Frequent urination
  • Urination urgency that persists throughout the day
  • Pain during intercourse
