Breast Form Fitting Service
You have many options available to restore your appearance following breast
surgery. These include a variety of breast forms and lingerie.
Why is having a breast
form so important?
Having a weighted silicone breast form (or prosthesis) helps your body
maintain its balance.
Without that balance, the likelihood of upper back and neck pain increases. A
breast form also will help to restore your appearance as well as your
self-confidence.
Are there different types of breast forms?
Yes, they come in many different sizes and shapes to accommodate various body
types and breast shapes. The kind of surgery you had (mastectomy or lumpectomy)
will help to determine which type of breast form will be best for you.
How is the breast form kept secure?
Lingerie are designed with a pocket to hold the breast form. Some regularly
available bras, especially "sports" designs, will keep the form secure. Forms
that attach directly to the skin are an option for some.
What breast forms are available to help enhance the contour of a breast
following a lumpectomy?
There are a variety of sizes and shapes of silicone and soft, cotton forms
that can be inserted into a bra following a lumpectomy.
Do I need a prescription from my doctor for this service?
Yes, this is needed for insurance purposes. Please bring a prescription from
your physician when you come for your first fitting.
Will my insurance pay for lingerie or breast forms?
Medicare and most private insurance cover these products. Please check with your insurance provider for specific policy
information.
What do I wear on the day of my fitting?
Wear something loose and comfortable. Choose a top that is easy to put on and
take off. Solid colors also help you visualize the shape and size of the breast
form better.
How soon can I come for a fitting?
Your first fitting can be scheduled approximately 6 weeks after surgery. If
you also will be having radiation therapy, call us and we'll advise you.
What other items do you have available?
We have a soft camisole with a lightweight cotton prosthesis that is great
for immediately after surgery or during radiation therapy. We also have forms
that are designed for use in swimsuits.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes, an appointment is necessary so that adequate time is available to assure
that this very personal experience is a positive one and that you leave feeling
good about the choices you have made.
