Aurora Sinai Birth Center

Neonatology and high risk deliveries

Get a PDF copy of the pre-admission form

Caring for your baby begins with choosing the right hospital. More than 2,900 families a year choose the Birth Center at Aurora Sinai Medical Center to deliver their babies.

That's because of our warm family atmosphere and because we are one of the few hospitals in the area with a Level III rating for both labor and delivery and our Newborn Intensive Care Unit. Hospitals with a Level III rating can provide care for the most complicated deliveries. If you are pregnant and at risk, or your baby is premature or has special needs, we are fully equipped to care for both of you 24 hours a day.

The Aurora Sinai Birth Center experience

Your first stop will be where you and your baby will be carefully monitored by a labor and delivery nurse. Should true labor be present or if you are having problems, you will be transferred to the Birth Center where you will deliver your baby.

In the Birth Center, you will be taken to a comfortable, brightly decorated private room with your own bathroom, tub and shower. Here, you and up to 2 family members or friends will await the birth of your baby. This room will provide a quiet, homelike setting where you'll find all the care you and your baby will need. For your comfort, each room has a recliner, TV/VCR and access to the whirlpool tub.

At Aurora Sinai Medical Center, you may give birth in whatever position you find most comfortable, as long as it is safe for the baby. Under the direction of your doctor or nurse midwife we can give you medication and anesthesia during labor and delivery.

If your doctor or nurse midwife finds that you need a Cesarean birth, it will be performed right in the Birth Center. The recovery area is also on the same floor. You'll be reassured to know that Aurora Sinai has the lowest rate of C-sections in the state – only 11% compared with a statewide rate of 16% and a nationwide rate of 22%.

Our Birth Center staff includes:

The center is fully equipped with ultrasound and advanced equipment to monitor you and the baby closely during labor and delivery.

After delivery

After delivery, you will be transferred to your own private room in the Women's Care Center, where you and your baby will stay for the next day or two. Here you will complete your recovery and get to know your new baby.

This is also a time to learn more about caring for your baby – especially important for first-time mothers. Nurses are available to help you learn more about feeding, bathing and other care your baby will need. Our lactation consultant will also provide you with assuring techniques for your breastfed baby. Our staff takes every precaution to ensure the safety and security of you and your baby.

After you return home, you may receive a call from one of our nurses, just to make sure everything is all right. We know that parenthood can sometimes be overwhelming as well as wonderful. So after you're home, if you have any questions, one of our experienced nurses can help you with anything you need. Call us anytime at 414-219-5727.

High-risk deliveries

Most deliveries at Aurora Sinai are without complications. As a Level III maternity center, however, we are always prepared to respond to high-risk deliveries. Our Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) neonatologists are on staff 24 hours a day. A neonatologist is a doctor who specializes in the care of babies with special needs.

Our neonatologist works with a team:

  • physician assistants
  • nurse practitioners
  • clinical nurse specialists
  • registered nurses
  • occupational therapists
  • social workers

Aurora Sinai Medical Center has been a national leader in the developmental care of premature infants. We recognize that babies who are born prematurely have different needs than babies who are carried to full term. The NICU team provides the level of care that is best suited to the needs of each baby.

The NICU is a quiet, secure setting equipped with advanced technology. Babies sleep in isolettes covered with quilts that help shield them from too much light and noise. This is important because the baby's central nervous system is still developing.

Staff members in the NICU try to involve the family in the baby's recovery as early as possible. We provide sleeping rooms for parents next to the nursery so they may visit the baby anytime. We encourage family members to visit the baby, including brothers and sisters who are 3 years of age and older.

Through a program called "Kangaroo Care," parents of premature infants are encouraged to help their babies grow and thrive through close skin-to-skin contact. The baby, wearing only a diaper, is placed on the mother's (or father's) bare chest. The parent then wraps his or her outer garment around the baby to form a cozy pocket and keep the baby warm. The baby appears to be peeking out of its mother's "pouch" like a baby kangaroo.

For premature infants, Kangaroo Care means improved growth and weight gain, fewer crying episodes, longer sleep periods, more stable breathing patterns and earlier breastfeeding. Parents also find the experience very satisfying.
