The following checklist will give you an idea of the variety of tactics that a controlling/abusive partner can use. This list is not all-inclusive, but it may reveal some significant patterns of behavior that you are being subjected to.

Does your partner tell you that you are nothing without him/her?
Does your partner treat you rough – grab, push, pinch, shove, choke or hit you?
Does your partner ever threaten to hurt you physically?
Has your partner ever pressured you to be involved in any sexual activity that made you feel uncomfortable or degraded?
Has your partner forced you to have sex?
Does your partner cause destruction to your personal property or pets, or take anger out on inanimate objects (wall, etc.)?
Does your partner use alcohol or drugs as an excuse for saying hurtful things or abusing you?
Does your partner blame you for how he/she feels or acts?
Does your partner make you feel like there is “no way out” of the relationship?
Do you believe that you can help your partner change if only you changed something about yourself?
Do you feel like no matter what you do, your partner is never happy with you?
Do you stay with your partner because you are afraid of what your partner would do if you broke up?
Do you feel that your partner keeps you away from your family and friends?
