Osteoporosis assessment tool

Select one answer for each of the statements below that best reflects your situation. Please keep in mind that this is a general assessment. Further and more in-depth assessment may be obtained from your health care provider.

Is your diet low in dairy products? If you consume between 1,200 to 1,500mg of calcium per day, you can slow bone loss (8 ounces of milk = 300mg).
Would you describe the amount of daily exercise you get as minimal to none?
Do you smoke cigarettes? Smoking leads to an earlier menopause (two years) and decreases estrogen, which leads to bone loss.
Do you drink more than two alcoholic drinks a day? Drinking moderate to heavy amounts of alcohol can have damaging effects on the bones.
Do you weigh less than 127 pounds and have a small-boned frame? Studies show that women who weigh less than 127 pounds are at higher risk.
Have you or someone from your family broken a bone as an adult? Women who have fractured a bone as an adult may already have weak bones. A family history of osteoporosis, especially a hip fracture in your mother, can mean that you are more likely to develop it yourself.
Are you Caucasian or Asian? Evidence shows that Caucasian and Asian women are more likely to have fractures and develop osteoporosis because they have lower bone density at maturity than women in other ethnic groups.
Are you postmenopausal? Since estrogen protects against osteoporosis, women who are in menopause are more likely to develop osteoporosis.
Have you been taking steroid medications for a long time to treat asthma, arthritis or other diseases? Steroid medications can cause loss of bone, putting you at high risk for osteoporosis.
