This research study involves the use of an experimental (not approved by the FDA) drug, Acadesine, and will evaluate whether it can reduce the risk of developing complications after "Open Heart" surgery.

To be eligible to participate you must be a high risk non-emergency "Open Heart" surgery patient 50 years old or older and have at least one of the following risk factors:

  • Female
  • Prior "Open Heart" surgery
  • Heart Attack less than 2 years ago
  • Prior Stroke
  • Ejection Fraction 30% or less
  • Diabetic requiring medication
