Your guide to preventive testing

Staying healthy means making sure you have regular health screenings to help prevent problems or find them at early stages. Listed below are the major recommendations for healthy adults from the United States Preventive Services Task Force. This is only a guide. Talk with your doctor about what tests you need. Ask about additional tests or vaccines you may need if you are pregnant or are at risk for certain health problems.

Blood pressure check

At least every 2 years, or as recommended by your doctor

Total cholesterol and HDL levels Blood tests every 5 years (or as recommended by your doctor) for men starting at age 35, women starting at 45

Immunizations

A complete list of adult vaccines, including those for people at risk for certain conditions.

The CDC’s adult vaccine quiz (What Vaccines Do You Need?)

  • Tetanus booster shot every 10 years (If your last booster shot was more than 10 years ago, your doctor may recommend another form of tetanus vaccine called "Tdap."
  • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine if you were born after 1957 and have never had measles or been vaccinated
  • Varicella vaccine (or titer checked) if you have never had chicken pox or shingles or been vaccinated
  • Influenza vaccine every year starting at age 50
  • Pneumococcal vaccine once at age 65 or after
  • Herpes zoster vaccine once after age 60

Additional tests recommended for women

Recommendation Details

Mammogram

Every 1-2 years, starting at age 40

Pap test At least every 3 years (after 3 normal tests) up to age 65, if you have ever been sexually active and have not had your uterus removed
Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine 3 doses for young women through age 26 years
Rubella susceptibility Childbearing-age women who have not had rubella (German measles) or been vaccinated
Chlamydia screening Women age 25 and younger who are sexually active
Bone density
(for osteoporosis)
Periodic, as recommended by your doctor, starting at age 65

Additional test recommended for men

Recommendation Details

Abdominal aortic aneurysm test

One-time ultrasound test for men age 65 to 75 who have ever smoked
