Cardiovascular Research

Rose's story

Rose wasn't a good candidate for open heart surgery, so her physician at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center recommended she undergo the innovative and minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR procedure. See her story.

The Aurora Difference

Heart Care Breakthroughs That Stand the Test of Time.

Our role in revolutionizing cardiology care dates back to 1968. Researchers at Aurora Health Care pioneered a procedure allowing blood flow to bypass clogged arteries (coronary artery bypass grafting or CABG). Today, CABG is the gold standard for heart attack care in hospitals worldwide. Learn more about our history of research innovation.

Redefining Cardiovascular Care

Aurora’s tradition of establishing best-in-class care lives on in our current cardiovascular research efforts. Teams of researchers are pursuing answers to important questions that are helping people live a better quality of life.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Advancing care in tandem with industry collaborators: We work with medical device companies to test the effectiveness of new treatments. We were the first program in Wisconsin offering a first-of-its-kind bioresorbable stent. These devices support weakened blood vessels as they heal and are made of materials that dissolve over time. After the blood vessel heals and is able to support blood flow on its own, the stent dissolves. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a nonsurgical approach for replacing heart valves. We continue to explore the different ways this approach can be applied. This information will help us accurately determine the best treatment for each person. Find out more about cardiovascular clinical trials.
  • Tailoring care to meet each person’s unique needs: Our team was instrumental in developing techniques to map the electrical activity of the heart. This work has made arrhythmia treatments safer and more precise. Find out more about cardiovascular translational research.
  • World-class care: Aurora is home to world-renowned cardiovascular experts. Find out more about our heart and vascular services.

Our Research

Cardiology & Cardiovascular Research and Clinical Trials

We are using data, technology and expertise to expand the reach of our research and usher in the best-in-class treatments of tomorrow.

Our research interests include:

  • Using data to shed new light on medical problems: Our scientists are studying tissue samples to learn why heart disease becomes more common as we age. We are one of a few programs in the country with a program fully dedicated to researching the aging heart. Learn more about our Center for Integrative Research on Cardiovascular Aging.
  • First-in-the-world access to new technologies: We were the first program in the world offering 4-D heart ultrasound. This imaging technology allows us to examine heart structures in exquisite detail without surgery. 4-D ultrasound helps us diagnose cardiovascular problems with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Improving care for people throughout the Aurora system: We are harnessing the power of electronic medical records to improve care for people with heart conditions. When a person’s heart rhythm becomes unstable, special technology built into our electronic medical records system helps us make quick and accurate decisions about which medications may fix the problem.
