10 Herbs and Spices That Boost Health

It’s easier than you think to cook up delicious meals that are healthy for you. A great place to start is by adding herbs and spices to wholesome foods like vegetables, whole grains and lean protein.  Herbs and spices will not only make healthy foods enjoyable, but they also help cut back on added salt, fat and sugar.

Here are some quick and easy ways to incorporate basic herbs and spices into your family’s favorite foods:

Add zing to fruit

Spices are the perfect complement to many fruits.  For starters, try these ideas:

  • Sprinkle cinnamon on apples and berries instead of sugar
  • Add red pepper to bring a surprise to grilled fruits

Flavorful calcium-rich treats

Spices and herbs give a tasty dimension to low-fat dairy products – without adding extra sugar.

  • Combine Greek yogurt, cinnamon, strawberries and bananas for a refreshing smoothie
  • Mix herb seasoning into plain Greek yogurt instead of using sour cream
  • Enhance cottage cheese with basil and oregano for a savory snack
