Health Rankings for Your County and Others

Where we live has a big effect on our lifestyles. It also has an effect on our health. We can see how our locales can have an effect our health in a special report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute.

The Health Rankings compare communities based on attributes such as jobs, education, housing, community safety, diet and exercise. The results give a comparative view of counties as places to live, learn, work and play.

The rankings measure characteristics such as:

  • Health outcomes
    • Length of life
    • Quality of life
  • Health factors
    • Health behaviors — smoking, excessive drinking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle
    • Clinical care — the number of providers, preventable hospitalizations, health screenings
    • Social and economic factors — education, poverty, violent crime
    • Physical environment — air pollution, housing, commutes
