immunotherapy treatment for cancer patients

overview

Immunotherapy modifies your own immune cells – making them work harder and smarter – to help your body combat cancer and other diseases.

Your body’s immune system works to fight off illnesses and infections, but it’s often unable to kill tumor cells. Our Cancer Immunotherapy Program can help, with customized treatments for you specific needs. And because immunotherapy uses cells from your own body, it may cause fewer side effects and be more effective than other cancer treatments.

We offer 3 immunotherapy treatment plans. You may be eligible if you:

  • Are out of bed more than half the day
  • Have relatively normal heart, lung, kidney and liver function
  • Have no brain metastases or metastases that are treated and stable
  • Do not use steroids or steroid-containing compounds

services & treatment

The Kidney Cancer Treatment Plan can treat kidney cancer that has spread to other parts of your body (metastatic renal cell cancer). One course of therapy requires 2 treatment cycles. For each cycle, you’re given immunotherapy agents intravenously every 8 hours for a maximum of 12 doses. This requires a 5- to 7-day stay in the hospital. After the first cycle, you are discharged and given 10 to 14 days of rest before beginning the second cycle. Once both cycles have been completed, you’ll be evaluated 2 to 4 weeks later to see how your cancer is responding. At that point, additional courses of therapy may be offered.

The Skin Cancer Treatment Plan can treat melanoma that has spread to other parts of your body (metastatic melanoma).

We also offer a Biochemotherapy Treatment Plan for melanoma, in which immunotherapy is added to chemotherapy to improve your response to the treatment. Biochemotherapy uses lower doses of the immunotherapy agents than standard immunotherapy, which means fewer side effects. It may be an option if you’re unable to tolerate high doses of the treatment. One cycle of biochemotherapy treatment requires a hospital stay of 5 to 7 days. For each cycle, you are given a combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy agents intravenously or via injections. Once the cycle is complete, you’ll be evaluated 2 or 3 weeks later to see how your cancer is responding. At that point, additional cycles of therapy may be offered.
