neck disorders

overview

Neck disorders are conditions that affect the neck, such as thyroid cancer, thyroid disease and parathyroid disease. The ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists at Aurora are specially trained to treat a variety of neck disorders, to get you back to feeling your best.

treatment options

Your treatment will depend on your individual needs. Your ENT specialist will discuss your options, which may include surgery, such as:

  • Neck dissection: removal of lymph nodes and surrounding neck tissue, often used to treat cancer. There are several types of neck dissection, including radical, modified radical and selective.

  • Parathyroidectomy: removal of one or more of the parathyroid glands or tumors that are growing on these glands. It’s often done to treat parathyroid cancer or hyperparathyroidism.

  • Sentinel lymph node biopsy: removal of the sentinel lymph node, which is the lymph node where cancer cells are most likely to spread to first. It’s usually used to find out whether cancer has traveled to the lymph nodes, which helps an oncologist determine how advanced the cancer is. Compared to standard lymph node surgery, these types of biopsies are less likely to cause complications.

  • Thyroidectomy: also known as thyroid surgery, this procedure is the removal of all or part of the thyroid gland. It’s usually done to treat thyroid cancer, hyperthyroidism or an enlarged thyroid gland.
