When it comes to the flu vaccine, you’ve got options.

Each year in the United States, over 200,000 people are hospitalized and some 36,000 people die from the flu. According to the Center for Disease Control, the best way to protect yourself from the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each and every year.

But what if you’re allergic to the ingredients in the vaccine, or have special dietary restrictions?

At Aurora, we understand that one size rarely fits all. That’s why we offer two flu vaccine options - the traditional flu shot and Flublok® for patients who can’t or don’t consume eggs.

And with convenient appointments available at a clinic or pharmacy near you, it’s never been easier to stay protected all flu season long.

Flu Shot

The flu shot is a traditional flu vaccine given via intramuscular injection with a needle. It can be given to:

  • Children 6 months and older
  • Adolescents
  • Adults of any age
  • Pregnant women

The flu shot should NOT be given to:

  • Children younger than 6 months old
  • Anyone who's had a serious allergic reaction after getting the flu vaccine
  • Anyone with a moderate to severe fever
  • Anyone who developed Guillain-Barré Syndrome within 6 weeks of getting a flu vaccine
  • Anyone allergic to any part of the vaccine, including those who've had severe allergic reactions to eggs (If you eat foods made with eggs, you can get the vaccine. If you can't eat food made with eggs, see the FluBlok® option below)

Flublok® is a flu vaccine that's completely free of common allergens like eggs and latex. Flublok® is FDA-approved for adults 18 and older. If you're concerned about allergies, or if you are vegan, talk to your Primary Care doctor about using Flublok® as your flu vaccine this season.
