Thoracic Surgery

Skilled Care for the Heart, Lung, Chest & Aorta

Conditions that affect the thoracic (chest) region of the body can be extremely complex. They may encompass multiple organs, damage the lungs or bring risks to your aorta, the heart’s largest artery.

At Aurora Health Care, we offer unparalleled expertise in both thoracic surgery and minimally invasive treatments. We offer video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) and robotic surgery, which allows doctors to use robot-assisted tools to perform very precise treatment. In fact, doctors from around the world come to Aurora to learn about cutting-edge thoracic robotic surgery.

World-Class Care

Collaborative Thoracic Care, Outstanding Results

Our team of skilled thoracic surgeons works closely with heart and vascular (blood and circulatory system) surgeons and cardiologists (heart specialists) to provide exceptional treatment for heart, chest, lung and circulatory conditions.

People choose to receive care at Aurora because of our:

  • Highly rated quality: The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has awarded Aurora Health Care the distinguished 3-star rating for aortic valve replacement and aortic valve replacement plus coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The 3-star rating is the premier award given by STS to hospitals for their heart surgery quality.
  • Robotic surgery: We are one of a handful of thoracic robotic case observation and training centers in the country. Robotic surgery allows us to perform precise surgical procedures. We use advanced techniques including VATS (video-assisted thorascopic surgery) to treat thoracic conditions with only a small incision.
  • Wide range of treatments: In addition to surgeries performed on the lung and esophagus, our thoracic surgeons perform unique procedures including rib plating, bronchial and tracheal stenting and robotic surgery. Additionally, our team works collaboratively with radiation oncology for treatments such as CyberKnife®, photodynamic therapy for lung cancer and brachytherapy (specialized radiation oncology treatment).

Conditions We Treat

Thoracic Conditions We Treat

Our team is skilled in handling a variety of chest and lung conditions. We specialize in surgery of the chest, including the lungs, esophagus, mediastinum (part of the chest cavity that separates the lungs), diaphragm and chest wall (rib cage).

Whenever possible, we emphasize minimally invasive techniques – treatments without surgery – such as VATS (video-assisted thoracic surgery) and robotic-assisted surgery.

Conditions we treat include:

  • Achalasia (a condition that prevents the muscle at the bottom of the esophagus from relaxing)
  • Chest and lung conditions
  • Esophageal Cancer
  • Hiatal hernia (when part of the stomach pushes upward through a weak spot in the diaphragm)
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
  • Lung cancer
  • Mediastinal malignancies (tumors in the part of the chest that separates the lungs) and chest wall tumors
  • Myasthenia gravis (an autoimmune disease that causes weakened muscles)
  • Pleural effusion (fluid next to the lungs)
  • Sarcomas (a tumor of the soft tissue)
