Preventive Care:Adult Physical Exam

Overview

Getting an annual physical exam is a smart, simple way to take care of your health. The benefits of getting a complete physical examination every year include:

  • Increasing your chances of finding serious problems early so that your doctor can treat them right away
  • Getting a chance to ask your primary care physician any questions you may have, and discussing anything that’s worrying you
  • Creating a valuable history of key health measurements, like your blood pressure and weight
  • Discussing any over-the-counter (OTC) prescription medications you’re taking to make sure they’re working well for you

How often should you get a physical exam?

Most primary care physicians recommend patients come in for an adult comprehensive physical exam at least once per year. Even if you feel healthy, it’s a good idea to continue regular medical exams since they give you the chance to ask your doctor any questions you may have. They also help your doctor detect any underlying issues at their earliest possible stage - issues you may not have detected on your own.

What to Expect

During an adult health/wellness checkup, your doctor may order basic blood tests like a complete blood count (CBC) or a chemistry screen. He or she may discuss screenings for cholesterol, cancer or other conditions.

During any preventive care appointment, you can also expect:

  • To be asked about your lifestyle - your diet, how much you exercise and whether you smoke or drink
  • To have your pulse, blood pressure, respiration rate and temperature checked
  • To have your doctor check your abdomen, limbs, head and neck, heart, lungs, inside your mouth, skin and fingernails

Specific to female physical exams:

  • Breast exam
  • Pelvic exam

Specific to male physical exams:

  • Penis and testicular exams
  • Prostate exams
  • Hernia exams
