Critical Care Medicine Fellowship

Program Overview

Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center offers a 2‑year, ACGME‑accredited Critical Care Medicine Fellowship to develop broadly trained intensivists who can practice in any ICU setting. Our core values are:

  • Diversity of experiences and opinions: Our fellows receive excellent medical critical care training, but we place equal emphasis on their experiences in our specialty ICUs. Our fellows work with intensivists stemming from every adult critical care specialty, exposing them to the full breadth of perspective and approach to critical care medicine.
  • Integration: Every ICU and every intensivist, irrespective of parent specialty, belongs to a unified Department of Critical Care. This highly unusual organizational structure fosters exceptional collaboration, consistency and collegiality across our many ICUs, and creates a superior education environment for our fellows.
  • Teamwork: Our ability to manage extraordinarily sick and complex patients demands a highly functioning, multi-disciplinary care team. We look for fellows who are enthusiastic team players and who want to become exceptional team leaders.
  • Continuous improvement: We are never satisfied with the status quo, and we actively solicit fellow input to improve our program with each passing year.
  • Enjoying the ride: Critical care is a demanding profession. We nurture our excitement and enthusiasm by taking care of ourselves and each other.

Program Highlights

  • Open to qualified Internal Medicine (IM) or Emergency Medicine (EM) trained physicians.
  • Every ICU is closed and staffed by intensivists who belong to a unified Department of Critical Care, ensuring consistent supervision, education standards, and fellow support.
  • Training in point‑of‑care ultrasonography with electives in advanced echocardiography and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Fellows can become board-eligible in critical care echocardiography.
  • Training in basic and difficult airway management, surgical airway, and ICU bronchoscopy. The critical care team manages all airways outside of the OR and ER.
  • No shift (day or night) exceeds 12 hours; fellows provide some in‑house night coverage in the MICU, supported by in‑house intensivists.
  • Dedicated academic half-day. Fellows are freed from all clinical duties to attend.
  • Extensive ICU simulation curriculum.
  • Research, QI, and other projects supported by research faculty, faculty mentors, elective time, and scheduled meetings during didactic days.
  • Unopposed training. Our fellows are the only critical care fellows in our system.
