Clinical Trials & Cardiovascular Research

Clinical Trials &Cardiovascular Research

Research and innovation are at the heart of our cardiovascular services. New discoveries generate big gains in the care we provide. And this leads to what matters most: longer, healthier lives for you and your loved ones.

Research & Innovation at Aurora

Research has led to breakthroughs in lifesaving procedures and devices like the defibrillator, stents and the artificial heart. Because of our reputation for excellence in heart and vascular care, we’re frequently offered opportunities to help investigate the next generation of new discoveries.

People who participate in a clinical trial may be able to benefit from treatments while they are still in the investigational phase. And for all patients, our reputation for innovation means we can offer the newest care as soon as it becomes available.

Alternative to a Pacemaker

When retired military officer Dr. Michael Kaske discovered he had cardiomyopathy, he also discovered that a traditional pacemaker wouldn’t work for him. As part of a clinical trial at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, he became the third person in the U.S. to receive a new device to make his heart work properly.

Our Advances

A Legacy of Innovation

Our research and clinical trials have contributed to many advances in cardiovascular treatment, including:

Advances in Heart Care

  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR): We are a national training center for TAVR, a procedure that provides aortic valve implantation without surgery for high-risk patients. Read more about transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
  • Heart pumps and VAD: We’re leaders in ventricular assist devices (VAD) and heart pump implantations. We have been a clinical trials site for most artificial heart pumps tested over the past 30 years. Find out more about VAD.
  • Minimally invasive AFib ablation: We have developed new, hybrid techniques for atrial fibrillation (AFib) ablation. Learn more about hybrid ablation surgery.
  • Coronary bypass: We helped develop the gold-standard method of coronary bypass surgery to improve blood flow to the heart. Read about coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
  • Hybrid procedures: We have partnered with leading medical companies to build completely modernized facilities, so we can provide innovative hybrid procedures. In these procedures, our surgeons and interventional cardiologists work together to provide better results and faster healing. Read more about interventional cardiology.

Advances in Vascular Care

We are a leader in providing vascular (vein) treatment, including surgical and nonsurgical care. Learn more about our vascular services.

Some of our advances in vascular care include:

  • pBranch device: We are the only health system in Wisconsin that offers the pBranch device for treating juxtarenal aneurysms (bulges located next to the kidney’s arteries).
  • Customized stent grafts: We are among just a few places in the United States that provide customized abdominal aortic aneurysm stent grafts for unusually shaped aneurysms, so that you can avoid open surgery. Learn more about abdominal aortic aneurysm.
