Addiction Medicine Fellowship curriculum

The addiction medicine curriculum includes core clinical rotations at 4 different sites that will lay the foundation for a strong knowledge base in addiction medicine.

The program will be anchored at Aurora Health Center Metro hospitals in Milwaukee, WI. The program will include two required four week teaching rotations at two sites serving rural communities- Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center (ASMMC) and Aurora Lakeland Medical Center(ALMC).

The electives available will allow fellows the opportunity to add specialized areas to their training for development in more additional areas of addiction medicine. Education is offered through both didactic and direct instruction. The fellowship is designed to meet the objectives of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Through a combination of inpatient and outpatient care. Fellows will receive training to become clinicians and leaders in the field of Addiction Medicine.

  • Pain Consultation Service
  • Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral Treatment
  • Psychiatry Clinic
  • Infectious Disease
  • Substance use disorder residential treatment program
  • Transplant
  • Maternal addiction recovery program
  • The overall educational goals will be obtained through continuity care, core rotations, elective rotations, and scholarly activity. Upon completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be expected to be proficient in:
    • Comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients with substance use disorders (SUDs)
    • Screening, brief intervention and intensive intervention with addiction specialists’ team
    • Professional helping skills addressing individuals with SUD
    • Basic knowledge of neurobiology and changes in brain structure associated with addiction
    • Pharmacology of common psychoactive substances
    • Epidemiology of substance use and SUDs
    • Common behavioral addictions
    • Prevention of SUDs
    • Intoxication and withdrawal management

Training Experience

Training will consist of didactic, clinical and research experiences over a 12-monthperiod across the spectrum of addiction medicine. Addiction Medicine fellows will acquire knowledge of substance use disorder, prevention, evaluation and treatment modalities in ambulatory care, acute care, psychiatric care and residential treatment facilities.

Fellows will be provided with a minimum of 4 hours/week of didactic structure.
