Emergency Heart Care

If you think you are having a heart attack, call 911.

Any kind of emergency requires immediate medical attention, but a heart emergency may feel especially frightening.

World-Class Care

Leading Emergency Heart Care Expertise

When they need emergency heart care, people choose Aurora because of our:

  • Fast treatment: An important measure of emergency cardiac care quality is door-to-balloon time. Like other hospitals, we measure the time it takes to clear blocked arteries once someone arrives for heart attack care. We are one of the nation’s fastest at clearing blocked arteries (90th percentile).
  • Reputation for excellence: Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center is the only Wisconsin hospital to be nationally ranked for cardiology/heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report. The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association have also recognized our performance in treating people for cardiac care and stroke. The combination makes us one of only 26 U.S. hospitals to receive “Triple Recognition” (acknowledgment by all three groups) for stroke and cardiac treatment. Read more about our world-class care.
  • Dedicated doctors: Our exceptionally dedicated doctors provide fast and compassionate care. We have doctors on-site to do cardiac catheterization procedures 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Their availability can save time when an emergency strikes. Learn more about cardiac catheterization.

Treatments

Emergency Heart Treatments

When it comes to cardiac emergencies, our doctors can care for any situation with resources including:

  • Angioplasty: Also known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), angioplasty is the gold standard for clearing clogged blood vessels. Read more about interventional cardiology, which uses thin tubes called catheters to diagnose and treat certain heart conditions.
  • Hybrid operating rooms: In our hybrid operating rooms, doctors can perform PCI and other catheter-based procedures as well as open surgery. That saves time and avoids delays. Learn more about cardiovascular surgery.
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO): We are one of only a few locations in Wisconsin to offer ECMO therapy. ECMO uses a machine to circulate blood and oxygen through the body when you need support. It can help people who are in shock after a severe heart attack, or people who are waiting for a heart transplant.

Our doctors have expertise caring for every type of heart condition, both during an emergency and throughout your recovery.

Aneurysm

An aneurysm, or a bulge in an artery, may not have symptoms unless it ruptures. With great expertise, we offer surgical and non-surgical care for all types of aneurysm.

Blood Clots

Blood clots can go unnoticed – until they cause an emergency. Our sophisticated cardiac catheterization labs make every tool available to our doctors, so that they can eliminate blood clots. We’ll also help you make a plan to avoid blood clots in the future.

Heart Attack

A heart attack can be subtle or terrifying. If a heart attack happens to you or your loved one, we have the tools, technology and expertise to find the cause. We can ease the pain and put your heart back on track.

Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic

A pulmonary embolism – a blood clot that reaches the lungs – requires emergency treatment.

Stroke

A stroke demands a fast response, and you’ll get it at Aurora Health Care locations. The American Stroke Association has recognized us for using evidence-based guidelines to improve the quality of care for people who experience a stroke.
