What Is an Athletic Trainer?

An athletic trainer is a licensed health professional who specializes in preventing, diagnosing and treating sports injuries. Athletic trainers work under the direction of Aurora sports medicine doctors. Our athletic trainers also help active people play at the top of their game through our sports performance programs.

  • Active community partner: Local organizations turn to Aurora’s athletic trainers for information and support. We participate in health fairs and speak at injury prevention seminars throughout the community. We also lend medical support to other community wellness and mass sporting events.

Our Role

The Difference Between an Athletic Trainer & a Personal Trainer

Although the titles sound similar, an athletic trainer and a personal trainer play very different roles:

  • A personal trainer helps active people achieve personal fitness goals, such as losing weight or getting stronger. Physical trainers often work in gyms.
  • An athletic trainer works with teams and individual athletes to prevent, diagnose and treat sports injuries. Athletic trainers also care for sports injuries in clinics alongside doctors and other health professionals.
