Peyronie's Disease

Peyronie’s disease occurs when scar tissue forms inside your penis and causes your erection to curve. It can make erections and sex painful.

Doctors aren’t sure what causes Peyronie’s disease. But they think it develops when small blood vessels inside your penis rupture during sex or athletic activity, or if you get injured. As your penis heals, it forms scar tissue that leads to Peyronie’s disease. Not all men with penile scar tissue develop the disease, so experts think genetics might be a factor, too.

Symptoms of Peyronie’s disease can develop gradually or suddenly. They include:

  • A significant bend or curve in your penis
  • Pain in your penis
  • Problems getting or keeping an erection
  • Shortening of your penis
  • Scar tissue that feels like a band of hard tissue around your penis

Services & Treatment

Symptoms of Peyronie’s often stabilize and then decrease over time, but if pain or curving in your penis is worrying you or keeping you from having sex, talk with an Aurora urologist.

Your doctor will ask you about your symptoms, perform a physical exam and work with you to find the best treatment to meet your needs. Your doctor might suggest medication. Surgery may also be an option if your problem is severe.
