overview

Oxygen is critical to your body’s tissues. When you suffer an injury, your tissue needs increased amounts of oxygen to survive. Chronic wounds develop when the natural healing process is disrupted or limited due to:
  • Age
  • Infection
  • Poor blood flow
  • Low blood oxygen levels
  • Prolonged inflammation
  • Poor nutrition
  • Diabetes and other systemic conditions
  • Pressure or repeated injury to the wound

what to expect

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) works by increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood to stimulate new tissue growth. The Hyperbaric Wound Clinic treats acute conditions and chronic woulds including:

  • Diabetic foot ulcers

  • Pressure ulcers

  • Surgical wounds

  • Burns

  • Poisoning

  • Infections

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Oxygen therapy is administered in an enclosed hyperbaric chamber of pressurized oxygen. While inside the chamber, patients breathe pure oxygen, which saturates the plasma in their blood. This helps the body's would-healing mechanisms function more efficiently.

When the body is exposed to pressurized oxygen, new blood vessels grow and replace damaged blood vessels. This restores blood flow and aids healing.

    riskfactors

    Tobacco use

The chemicals in tobacco narrow the blood vessels and affect your blood’s ability to carry oxygen.

    Diabetes mellitus

Diabetes causes blood vessels to deteriorate over time. This prevents them from sending oxygen to a wound site.

    Foreign material

Substances that your body cannot break down or rid itself of divert resources from healing wounds.

    Vascular disease

Conditions that affect the blood vessels and blood circulation can slow or stop healing and lead to non-healing wounds.
