Musculoskeletal pain surgery & treatment
Find an ortho specialistMusculoskeletal pain is pain that you feel in bones and muscles, in the tendons and ligaments that connect them and in nerves. It can be short-lived, like sore muscles after a tough workout, or it can be ongoing, like chronic back pain or arthritis.
Usually, a common injury like a sprain, bruise or fracture causes musculoskeletal pain, but overuse can cause it, too. For example, work or sports can cause carpal tunnel pain, which is a type of musculoskeletal pain. And some ongoing musculoskeletal pain doesn’t always have an obvious cause.
Whatever its source, musculoskeletal pain can affect anyone, and our Aurora Health Care orthopedic and sports health teams offer a range of surgical and nonsurgical treatments to treat it. We’ll work with you to pinpoint a treatment that brings you relief – from physical therapy and integrative medicine to joint replacement and more.

Advanced, compassionate care for musculoskeletal pain
No one wants to live with pain – and we do everything in our power to make sure our patients don’t have to. We’ll start by listening to you and learning what you are experiencing – and what you want from your treatment.
We’ll then discuss your care choices. Whenever possible, we’ll start with less-invasive methods of treatment first – like massage therapy, Feldenkrais or occupational therapy – before suggesting surgery.
Our approach to care for musculoskeletal pain also includes:
- Integrated and on-site therapy: Physical therapy is a large part of what we do – and we’re likely to suggest it first, in hopes we can help you avoid surgery. Our physical therapists work hand in hand with your other medical providers, which increases the effectiveness of your treatment. And as your therapist keeps your doctor in the loop about your treatment, using one shared electronic medical record, you’re able to avoid duplicate tests and unnecessary appointments. If you do end up needing surgery, you may be able to see your occupational therapist or hand therapist on-site in your hand surgeon’s office. This way, you can discuss your treatment with both providers at the same time – saving you both time and energy. Find out more about orthopedic physical therapy.
- Advanced surgical treatments: In addition to traditional procedures like total knee replacement, total hip replacement and joint fusions to relieve pain, we offer treatments that aren’t available everywhere. We were among the first in Wisconsin to provide direct anterior hip replacement (from the front for a faster recovery), bilateral knee replacement (both knees at once) and stemless shoulder replacement for those who aren’t candidates for standard shoulder replacement. We also offer tendon therapies, meniscus and cartilage transplant, and robot-assisted surgery. Learn more about our orthopedic medicine and surgery options.
- Expert care for orthopedic emergencies: At Aurora Medical Center in Summit, home to southeastern Wisconsin’s only Level II trauma care facility, you’ll find orthopedic surgeons and other experts who can handle just about any emergency, 24/7. Our orthopedic trauma surgeons have specialized training in treating multiple areas of the body at the same time – so no matter the cause of your musculoskeletal pain, they have the expertise to help you heal.
